Negative Expressions There are many negative expressions that don't use 'pas'.
ne..jamais Il ne se douche jamais. He never showers. ne..guère Laurent ne pense guère à l'argent. Laurent hardly ever thinks about money. ne..que Je ne me permet qu'un bonbon par jour. Plus c'est de la gourmandise. I only permit myself one bon bon a day. More is gluttony. ne..rien & rien...ne...
Elle ne veut rien me donner. She doesn't want to give me anything. Rien ne m'interesse. nothing interests me. ne .. personne & personne ne ..
Personne ne peut vous faire sentir inférieur sans votre consentement. No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. savoir: Il ne sait (pas) conduire. He doesn't know how to drive. Il ne le sait pas. (pas is necessary) He doesn't know it. oser: Je n'ose (pas) parler. I don't dare speak.
pouvoir: Nous ne pouvons (pas) aller. We can't go. Je ne peux pas.(pas is necessary) I can't. cesser: Il ne cesse (pas) de parler. He doesn't stop talking. Negations A verb is negated by placing ne after the subject and usually pas after the verb.
Je ne veux pas être un numéro. I don't want to be a number. Ne becomes n' before a vowel. In compound tenses pas follows the auxiliary. " La France a perdu une bataille! Mais la France n'a pas perdu la guerre! -- Appel du général de Gaulle France has lost a battle! But France has not lost the war. Placing ne pas before an infinitive negates it.
L'enfer est de ne pas aimer. Hell is not to love. In casual speech, the ne is often omitted.
